Psalms 126 THE REVERSAL OF ZION'S FORTUNES

KING JAMES BIBLE

1 A Song of degrees. WHEN the Lord turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream.
2 Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them.
3 The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.
4 Turn again our captivity, O Lord, as the streams in the south.
5 They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.
6 He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

KING JAMES 1611

1A song of degrees. When the Lord turned againe the captiuitie of Zion: wee were like them that dreame.

2Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing, then said they among the heathen: The Lord hath done great things for them.

3The Lord hath done great things for vs: whereof we are glad.

4Turne againe our captiuitie, O Lord: as the streames in the South.

5They that sow in teares: shall reape in ioy.

6He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtlesse come againe with reioycing: bringing his sheaues with him.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 When the LORD restored the captives of Zion, we thought we were dreaming.

2 Then our mouths were filled with laughter; our tongues sang for joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The LORD had done great things for them.”

3 The LORD has done great things for us; Oh, how happy we were!

4 Restore our captives, LORD, like the dry stream beds of the Negeb.

5 Those who sow in tears will reap with cries of joy.

6 Those who go forth weeping, carrying sacks of seed, Will return with cries of joy, carrying their bundled sheaves.

COMMENTARIE

PSALM 126 FOR RETURNING FROM CAPTIVIT, A SONG OF THANKSGIVING.

v 1-3 Those who had returned from captivity were full of joy and laughter, and even other nations acknowledged the Lord had done great things for Israel.

v 4 He prays for complete restoration from captivity, that others might come.

v 5,6 Returning from captivity, they would have tears as they tried to till the heavy sod, but they would have joy when they harvested the crop. Believers may have tears of concern or difficulty in witnessing to the unsaved, but they will rejoice for those who are saved. We do not drum up these tears as they are from the outflowing of our heart.
