PSALMS 14 Lament over widespread Corruption

KING JAMES BIBLE

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.
THE fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
2 The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.
3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
4 Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the Lord.
5 There were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous.
6 Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the Lord is his refuge.
7 Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! when the Lord bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

KING JAMES 1611

1To the chiefe musician, A Psalme of Dauid. The foole hath sayd in his heart, There is no God: they are corrupt, they haue done abominable workes, there is none that doeth good.

2The Lord looked downe from heauen vpon the children of men; to see if there were any that did vnderstand and seeke God.

3They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no not one.

4Haue all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eate vp my people as they eate bread, and call not vpon the Lord.

5There were they in great feare; for God is in the generation of the righteous.

6You haue shamed the counsell of the poore; because the Lord is his refuge.

7O that the saluation of Israel were come out of Sion! when the Lord bringeth backe the captiuitie of his people, Iacob shall reioyce, and Israel shalbe glad.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 For the leader. Of David. The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” Their deeds are loath some and corrupt; not one does what is good.

2 The LORD looks down from heaven upon the children of men, To see if even one is wise, if even one seeks God.

3 All have gone astray; all alike are perverse. Not one does what is good, not even one.

4 Will these evildoers never learn? They devour my people as they devour bread; they do not call upon the LORD.

5 They have good reason, then, to fear; God is with the company of the just.

6 They would crush the hopes of the poor, but the poor have the LORD as their refuge.

7 Oh, that from Zion might come the salvation of Israel! Jacob would rejoice, and Israel be glad when the LORD restores his people!

COMMENTARIE

v 1. All who say there is no God are fools, consequently they live corrupt lives.

v 2,3. As the Lord looked down He could see that mankind had become filthy.

v 4-6. The wicked have consistently despised the Jews and believers and think they will never be brought to justice for it. Some think they do God service Jn. 16:2.

v 7. David is longing for the establishment of God’s kingdom.
