PSALMS 22 THE INNOCENT PERSON PRAYER

To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David.
KING JAMES BIBLE

1 MY God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?
2 O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.
3 But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.
4 Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.
5 They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.
6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.
7 All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
8 He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.
9 But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother’s breasts.
10 I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother’s belly.
11 Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.
12 Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
13 They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.
14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.
18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
19 But be not thou far from me, O Lord: O my strength, haste thee to help me.
20 Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.
21 Save me from the lion’s mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.
22 I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.
23 Ye that fear the Lord, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.
24 For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.
25 My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him.
26 The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the Lord that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.
27 All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the Lord: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.
28 For the kingdom is the Lord’s: and he is the governor among the nations.
29 All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.
30 A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.
31 They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.

2O my God, I crie in the day time, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.

3But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel!

4Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliuer them.

5They cryed vnto thee, and were deliuered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.

6But I am a worme, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.

7All they that see me, laugh me to scorne: they shoote out the lippe, they shake the head, saying,

8He trusted on the Lord, that he would deliuer him: let him deliuer him, seeing he delighted in him.

9But thou art hee that tooke mee out of the wombe; thou didst make me hope, when I was vpon my mothers breasts.

10I was cast vpon thee from the wombe: thou art my God from my mothers belly.

11Be not farre from me, for trouble is neere; for there is none to helpe.

12Many bulles haue compassed me: strong bulles of Bashan haue beset me round.

13They gaped vpon me with their mouthes, as a rauening and a roaring Lyon.

14I am powred out like water, and all my bones are out of ioynt: my heart is like waxe, it is melted in the middest of my bowels.

15My strength is dried vp like a potsheard: and my tongue cleaueth to my iawes; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.

16For dogges haue compassed me: the assembly of the wicked haue inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feete.

17I may tell all my bones: they looke and stare vpon me.

18They part my garments among them, and cast lots vpon my vesture.

19But be not thou farre from mee, O Lord; O my strength, hast thee to helpe me.

20Deliuer my soule from the sword: my darling from the power of the dogge.

21Saue me from the lyons mouth: for thou hast heard me from the hornes of the vnicornes.

22I will declare thy name vnto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.

23Yee that feare the Lord, praise him; all yee the seede of Iacob glorifie him, and feare him all yee the seede of Israel.

24For he hath not despised, nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him, but when he cried vnto him, he heard.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 For the leader; according to “The deer of the dawn.” A psalm of David.

2My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why so far from my call for help, from my cries of anguish?

3 My God, I call by day, but you do not answer; by night, but I have no relief.

4 Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the glory of Israel.

5 In you our fathers trusted; they trusted and you rescued them.

6 To you they cried out and they escaped; in you they trusted and were not disappointed.

7 But I am a worm, not a man, scorned by men, despised by the people.

8 All who see me mock me; they curl their lips and jeer; they shake their heads at me:

9 “He relied on the LORD—let him deliver him; if he loves him, let him rescue him.”

10 For you drew me forth from the womb, made me safe at my mother’s breasts.

11 Upon you I was thrust from the womb; since my mother bore me you are my God.

12 Do not stay far from me, for trouble is near, and there is no one to help.

13 Many bulls surround me; fierce bulls of Bashan encircle me.

14 They open their mouths against me, lions that rend and roar.

15 Like water my life drains away; all my bones are disjointed. My heart has become like wax, it melts away within me.

16 As dry as a potsherd is my throat; my tongue cleaves to my palate; you lay me in the dust of death.

17 Dogs surround me; a pack of evildoers closes in on me. They have pierced my hands and my feet

18 I can count all my bones. They stare at me and gloat;

19 they divide my garments among them; for my clothing they cast lots.

20 But you, LORD, do not stay far off; my strength, come quickly to help me.

21 Deliver my soul from the sword, my life from the grip of the dog.

22 Save me from the lion’s mouth, my poor life from the horns of wild bulls.

23 Then I will proclaim your name to my brethren;

in the assembly I will praise you:

24 “You who fear the LORD, give praise! All descendants of Jacob, give honor; show reverence, all descendants of Israel!

25 For he has not spurned or disdained the misery of this poor wretch, Did not turn away from me, but heard me when I cried out.

26 I will offer praise in the great assembly;

my vows I will fulfill before those who fear him.

27 The poor will eat their fill; those who seek the LORD will offer praise. May your hearts enjoy life forever!”

28 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD; All the families of nations will bow low before him.

29 For kingship belongs to the LORD, the ruler over the nations.

30 All who sleep in the earth will bow low before God; All who have gone down into the dust will kneel in homage.

31 And I will live for the LORD; my descendants will serve you.

32 The generation to come will be told of the Lord, that they may proclaim to a people yet unborn the deliverance you have brought.

COMMENTARIE

This is called the "Passion Psalm" made sacred to Christians by the use of its opening line by Jesus on the cross.

V 1-21 Lamentation

V 22 The Vow

V 1-2 The Psalmist feels forsaken by God: Uttered by Jesus in Aramaic on the cross "Forsaken" ( MK 15:34 MT 27:46) is the only word that is reported in the earliest Traditon

V 8, trust can be “roll onto” or lean on. David used poetic words to express his emotions, which first was feeling forsaken, then being scorned. The Holy Spirit gave him the words which speak in typology of Christ and his crucifixion. Note the similarities prominent  in verses 1: 6-11:13-18.

V 13-18 Author of the Psalm is a porgnant suffer and his physical pain is keen. Descriptive of the anglish such as he endured.

V 16-18 His physical pain is intensifed by the hostility of the godless in the commanity.

v 19-21. David petitions God to spare him from death.

v 22-31. David praised the Lord for deliverance, but asked the congregation to praise Him. David will praise and pay his vows, and expects the world to turn to God. Typology here changed to Christ’s resurrection, Jn. 20;17, declare God to the brethren.

V 29 points to the time of ISA 56-66 and is probable dated in the middle of the fifth century BC
